Intersection

This command computes:

Intersections between 2 objects

Intersections between 3 objects

Intersections with a reference

The entites can be:

  • mesh(es)

  • plane(s)

  • polyline(s) or set of polylines

  • surfacic feature(s)

  • clipping plane(s)

  • CAD surfaces(1)

  • 3 planes(2)

The reference can be:

  • a plane

  • a line

  • a planar polyline

(1) to compute the intersection between 2 CAD surfaces, the software first discretize the surfaces with the default value then compute the intersection with the underlying meshes. Therefore, the result is an approximated polyline.

(2) only when the planes intersect on a single point.

You can launch the command with or without a selection. If the selection is relevant, the intersection is automatically computed when launching.

If an object of the selection can be a reference entity (line, plane or planar polyline), this object is automatically assigned to the reference object. In this case, the option With a reference entity is selected.

  1. Select objects.

  2. Select the intersection mode:

    • Between selected entities: Select the objects you want to intersect. When 2 objects are selected, the intersection is automatically computed.
In case of meshes, you can include tangent contacts.

    • With a reference plane / line / planar polyline: If it has not been selected yet, click Set reference to set the reference (a plane, a line or a planar polyline). Then select all the objects you want to intersect with it (you can use window selection).

      • In case of a reference plane, the plane is considered without extremities (infinite plane).

      • In case of a reference line, the line is considered without extremities (infinite line). If there is no exact intersection, a notification is displayed saying that a 3D intersection is computed.

      • In case of a reference planar polyline, the intersection calculation is possible with other polylines only if these are coplanar with the reference one. The intersection of polylines with a reference polyline considers the first and last segments of the reference as infinite.

Activate the option to Adjust lines to start or end on the plane / line / planar polyline if you want to extend or cut lines and polylines on the reference.

  3. Options:

    • In order to avoid hiding results (in case of opaque objects) you can check Transparent objects to put transparency on input objects.

    • When some intersections are present, you can display some labels by checking Create label.

  4. Validate and continue calculating intersections with OK, Next, or just validate and close the command with OK, Exit else close the command with Cancel.

Intersection with a reference

Calculating the intersections of several objects with one entity is much more efficient using a reference object.

Tip & Trick

Selection method: the selection methods are available when clicking on button shortcuts on the top left corner of the dialog box. Please, refer to the page Navigation and selection and Shortcut keys.

Note

Limit objects manipulation is available in this command with CTRL+SPACE shortcut.
